The beautiful island of Marken is situated only 20 minutes from Amsterdam in The Netherlands. Since 1957 the island is connected to the mainland. On the island reigns the medieval ambiance of alleys, bridges and colourful traditional costumes. The wide waters of the 'Gouwzee' and the silence of this UNESCO nominated island will sweep you off your feet. You can see the lighthouse and the shipping yards and you will get feeling to be out of this world. Amidst the characteristic houses close to the authentic harbour you can find a unique location: 'Hof van Marken'. An ideal location for cultural trips to nearby villages as 'Zuiderwoude', 'Monnickendam', 'Broek in Waterland', 'Volendam' en 'Edam'.
Since 1824 there was a village inn. After in February 1905 the wooden hotel and thirteen houses in the vicinity of the harbour burned down completely, in march 1905 the first stone was placed for the new lodging 'Hotel De Jong'. 100 years later the completely renovated hotel 'Hof van Marken' has seven rooms to rent.

Surroundings
In and around 'Marken' you can find enough to keep you occupied.
When you enter the 'Marker harbour', after your journey across the 'Gouwzee', you can visit Sijtje Boes with her famous ´kijkhuisje´ (model house) for an impression of Marker furniture and decoration. A visit to the reformed church and the Marker museum is certainly worth your while. Folklore fabric of the unique traditional clothing, characterising 'Marken' are available in the fabric store 'Family Visser'.
There is a wooden shoe workshop where you can see how wooden shoes are made. In the antique shop 'Ma Korving' you can forage in unique and/or antique. With the 'Marken Express' you can travel by boat from Marken over the 'Gouwzee' to the city of Volendam. Cultural trips can be made to the nearby villages of Zuiderwoude, Monnickendam, Broek in Waterland and Edam. Amsterdam is a 20 minute trip.
